Objectives: Clinical Pastoral Education is designed to provide theological and professional education utilizing clinical methods of learning in diverse contexts of ministry.
There are professional benchmarks of expected outcomes from CPE which formulate specific objectives.
Clinical Pastoral Education
CPE is Clinical Pastoral Education located in the indigenous community where ministry is done. Where possible, classes are conducted “on the spot”. All efforts are made to tailor the learning experience to fit the special needs of the specific context from which ministry comes. The group learning context is user-friendly, in that participants are supervised in regular group gatherings where both peers and supervisor learn from one another by giving and receiving feedback about their work.
CPE is considered experiential education at the graduate theological education level, and credit can be applied to on-going theological education with specific seminaries and graduate schools for clergy, laity, and professionals in the care-giving professions.
CPE makes extensive use of the reflective learning process:
1. Contemplation: when a person thinks about what is being learned
2. Reflective practice when there is reflection prior to an action and during the action and following the action. An example would be problem solving.
3. Experiential learning with actual experimenting in one’s environment. It is postulated this might be the best way to learn pragmatic
knowledge.
The College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy (CPSP) is a theological training and certifying organization which has affiliate membership with the Association of Theological Schools and is a full member of the Coalition on Ministry in Specialized Settings (COMISS).
CPSP Mission Statement
CPSP offers its Clinical Pastoral Education programs and programs in pastoral psychotherapy as a unique form of ministry and education. The respect of the student’s person and the healing change, growth, development, and unique integration of the personal and profession is central to CPSP’s mission.
The CPE program (certified quarters) of A Growth Place, Inc. follows the standards set by its accrediting organization, providing for a minimum of 400 hours of supervised learning per unit of training. The Atlanta chapter CPE Program offers an extended time unit which adheres to this requirement.
Each student is assigned special areas of pastoral responsibility for clinical pastoral experience. The pastoral placement is negotiated with each student. Day, evening or overnight assignments may be assigned depending on the clinical requirements of each unit.
